Just to verify and clarify, not kiddie porn.
I am currently taking a course on the internet, as a subject, and one of the discussions is children finding porn on the internet.
I'm just curious what everybody thinks about this subject.

This is a little off-topic. One of my favorite studies on porn:http://www.asc.upenn.edu/usr/chunter/porn_effects.html#catharsis
Sample:
"A number of cathartic effects have been found for pornography, but perhaps the most widely cited is the so called "Danish experience." In the 1960's Denmark experienced a "porno wave", but rather than censoring this content, in 1967 the government lifted all restriction on pornography (save a 16 year old age limit for purchasing porn). Yet rather than experiencing a wave of sex crimes as some had predicted, sex crimes actually declined. "
I think the bigger debate here is: do you say, "porn" or "porno"?

i think it's kind of inevitable that a child who spends time on the internet will encounter porn. if he or she is looking for it, it most definitely will be found, and even if he or she isn't, porn can crop up in all sorts of unexpected searches. also, if the kid's got email, pornographic spam is very possible (though good spam filters should catch most of it, i'd hope). that said, i think the best filter is good parental (or caretaker) involvement in the child's exploration of the internet. programs that try to block select sites considered not appropriate for children tend to 1) miss sites, 2) block kid-friendly sites, and/or 3) be circumvented by a resourceful child. if a parent or caretaker is with the child when he or she finds something potentially inappropriate, they can help the child parse what he or she has found. |

I totally agree with TheKat03. It's the parents/guardians responsibility to protect and discuss such issues. There are plenty of ways to be exposed. AND plenty of ways to prevent. My motto "If you're gonna have them (children), take care of them."

I started finding porn on the internet from popups at the age of 14. I got caught downloading porn on Kazzaa when I was 16, and now at 18 I don't need to watch porn, I meet many interesting ladies when I go nightclubbing. |
