The way I found out about this is. A bottom is someone in a scene who is being dominated. A sub is a lifestyle more 24/7 and serves a dom. [one dom per sub although a dom can have a stable] A sub has some rights but a slave has none.
Again it is a mindset more than anything else but I have met some subs who have contracts and have been collared. Collaring is like a marraige between a dom and a sub and there is even a ceremony if they want.
I have also met a slave who will serve another dom if his Mistress tells him too. |

Dominant - the one in control
Submissive - the one giving up control
Bottom - the one recieving the action ( spankee etc)
Top - the one performing the action ( spanker etc)
Masochist - one who enjoys recieving pain
Sadist - one how enjoys inflicting pain
Dominant/ submissive refer to who is in control
Top/Bottom refer to giving/recieving
for example, If a Dom, who is a masochist, says to a submissive "Spank me" he is both the dominant and the bottom. The submissive, who says "yes Sir" is still the submissive but is the top.
Spanker /spankee relationships are often top/bottom relationships because there is no giving up control. Play is solely for the sensations.
Submissive / slave always seems to end up as a heated discussion, but a submissive picks and choses when / how she submits. A slave is gives a much more generic consent for an extended / open ended period of time |
