Itunes has recently released that they are allowing podcast creators to now shift to a Pay-to-Play format where you will have to pay a monthly fee for subscripsions to a podcast. Now I know that Prof Tom is NOT a money grubbing asshole so I dont really fear that he would do this but I figured I should at least start the discussion. Yes for once in my life I am adopting a rather liberal POV and embracing a free media. Anyway I just figured I would post to let all of the listeners know. Also I urge you to fire off some emails to the creators of your other favorite podcasts and urge them to keep this all free. Hey I am even ok with some commercials or some shameless plugs for sponsers but dont make me pay. Dammit dont make me pay.
FYI here is a link to the article concering the latest stupid move by Apple http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/02/20/ricky_gervais_podcast_paid/ |

It was only a matter of time until someone figured out a way to profit from pod casting. Plus - this is almost the same method crack dealers use. Give it away for free until you are addicted, then once your hooked, you got to pay for it
Plus - I really don't see the pay-to-listen format really take off. Although I listen to a number of different podcast, most of them are not professional broadcasters and it shows in the quality of the show (sound, editing, format, consistency), so if they were to require a membership, their going to need to come up with a large upfront cost to get the show up to professional status and worth paying for. Not only equipment, but writers, fact checking, producers, etc. Then, there is the business side, taxes, payroll, subscriptions collections/accounting, etc.
Could it happen, yes, but I don't see it being excepted by the masses. At least I hope not. I pretty much look at pod casts as a MP3 version of a Blog.
Prof Tom - would love to get your thoughts.... |

In my opinion, if you have to pay it's NOT a podcast.
This show, it's forums and shownotes will always be free. Period.
We've talked about ways to monetize the show including: merchandise, paypal donations, sponsors, ads and selling old show on iTunes. But none of them feel right. I just don't like capitalism. It feels icky!
Just so I'm clear... you will always get this show for free and can burn it, file share it and give it to your friends. We're just glad you listen.
Any money this show makes will NEVER involved forced payment from a listener.

Whew... I would hate to have to not listen to my favorite podcast just because Itunes wants to be a dick.
